The month also saw the 16th Winter Olympics take place in Sapporo, Japan, attracting international attention. At the cinema, ‘ The Exorcist’ continued to generate enormous interest and controversy in Britain, while ‘ The Sting’ , starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, was another major international success. On TV, ‘ Dr Who celebrated it’s 10 th anniversary with ‘The Three Doctors ’ story, whilst ‘Last Of The Summer Wine’ began it’s 37 year run on British TV with a ‘Comedy Playhouse’ pilot at the beginning of the year.
