REGRESSION MIX 034 - January 1973
Hello. Listen carefully! I am going to take you back. Back to January 1973, when the UK officially joined the European Economic Community (EEC), and when the Prime Minister, Edward Heath, announced that businesses would only be allowed to use electricity three days a week, in attempt to alleviate the problems caused by the coal miners strike. The Vietnam War finally came to an official end, with the ‘official draft’ ending in the US. Elvis Presley’s ‘Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite’ was broadcast globally to dozens of countries, watched by over a billion people, it became one of the most famous music broadcasts in history. On TV, ‘Dr Who celebrated it’s 10th anniversary with ‘The Three Doctors’ story, whilst ‘Last Of The Summer Wine’ began it’s 37 year run on British TV with a ‘Comedy Playhouse’ pilot at the beginning of the year. Also returning to the TV screen was Rodney Bewes and James Bolan in a follow up series to the 60’s success ‘The Likely Lads’, imaginatively titled ‘Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads’. A very special appearance by Marc Bolan on Cilla Black’s TV vehicle ‘Cilla’ put the unlikely pairing together on a duet of Bolan’s ‘Life’s A Gas’, whilst Joan Armatrading made her debut on ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’. Cliff Richard sang six ‘songs for Europe’ for viewers to nominate their favourite for the Eurovision Song Contest later in the year, and there were new albums released by Monty Python, Donny Osmond and Steely Dan. Carly Simon appeared at the top of the American chart with ‘You’re So Vain’ while the Sweet’s ‘Blockbuster’ rose to the top of the UK charts, and other 70s superstars David Bowie, Elton John, Status Quo and Olivia Newton John were also riding high. All those memories, feelings and long past moments which made you who you are today. Now take a deep breath and let’s begin…
