REGRESSION MIX 035 - February 1974

LISTEN HERE

Hello. Listen carefully! I am going to take you back. Back to February 1974, when Britons went to the polls in an election that produced a hung Parliament — a striking conclusion to a month in which everyday life had already been disrupted by industrial action, power restrictions and the three-day week. The month also saw the 16th Winter Olympics take place in Sapporo, Japan, attracting international attention. At the cinema, ‘The Exorcist’ continued to generate enormous interest and controversy in Britain, while ‘The Sting’, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, was another major international success. On television, the films were as always, reviewed on a show hosted by Barry Norman called ‘Film 74’, while programmes such as ‘The Two Ronnies’ provided a reassuringly British form of Saturday-night entertainment. Children’s TV was covered with cute, furry creatures such as ‘Bagpuss’ and ‘The Wombles’, the latter of whom began their take over of the UK pop charts. Alvin Stardust, Slade, Mud and Suzi Quatro were among the leading names of the glam-rock era filling up the singles charts, whilst acts like Davis Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Ferry competed for honours in the album charts. All those memories, feelings and long past moments which made you who you are today. Now take a deep breath and let’s begin…
